The 7th annual Missoula Marathon has come and gone and it was a great day! As a RWM member and a runner in our community, I hope most of you were able to take part in what turned out to be an awesome weekend.
The weekend kicked off with a great Beer Run and Missoula 5k packet pickup at the Iron Horse Brew Pub on Friday evening. Minus the 15-minute thunderstorm, we had a great weather for the event. The Beer Run included the 5k packet pick-up, cold drinks, and hundreds of folks running the streets of Missoula. I can’t think of a better way to welcome out-of-town runners to our beautiful city.
Saturday morning marked the start of the Missoula 5k on the Higgins Bridge and the beginning of the Expo. The organization and flow of the Expo was better than ever and vendors had a great day! The Missoula 5k experienced some more big changes; the biggest change was moving the start line to Higgins Bridge in front of the Wilma. A record number of kids in the Kids Marathon and Jeff Galloway speaking at Caras Park were a few other highlights of what turned out to be a great Saturday!
Starting out very early Sunday morning (or what some might call late Saturday night), the course directors and finish line team went to work. This year’s course, water stations, and the finish line were set up in record time… no scrambling in 2013. 🙂 The canons and fireworks at 6am marked the start of what turned out to be the best yet for the Missoula Marathon and had a record number of entries! While finishing the race or cheering on your favorite racer, I hope you had time to notice the addition of live music, food, and drink on the Higgins Bridge! As one long term volunteer said, “There are at least 3 times as many spectators on the bridge this year”. We sincerely hope you were able to enjoy all of the festivities over the Missoula Marathon weekend.
Whether you ran, watched or volunteered; we couldn’t have done this without you! As an RWM member, I hope you are as proud of the event as the committee is. The committee works very hard all year long to make this the best event possible. Check out www.missoulamarathon.com and you will find a list of the committee members; please thank them for their commitment to the race and the club…. This race wouldn’t be possible without this dedicated group.
Not only did we have more participants but we had a record number of sponsors support this year’s event. We could not come close to putting on this type of race without them. The Missoula Marathon sponsors have made the running a community a priority and we need to support them when we can. There is a full list of sponsors on www.missoulamarathon.org; please also let them know how much you appreciate them stepping up and supporting RWM!
We are full steam ahead planning for next year’s event; we have some exciting changes for 2014. If you have any great ideas or ways to improve, please let us know. Thanks for your support!
