EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/MISSOULA MARATHON RACE DIRECTOR

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION SUMMARY: The Executive Director is a highly skilled non-profit professional responsible for developing and implementing the strategic plan, policies goals, objectives and mission of Run Wild Missoula. He/She works closely with the Board of Directors and provides direction and leadership to staff and volunteers and ensures that all parties work to carry out the organization’s mission. The Executive Director simultaneously holds the title of Missoula Marathon Race Director. In this role, she/he is responsible for organizing and implementing the Missoula Marathon, Run Wild Missoula’s signature event and primary annual fundraiser.

REPORTS TO: Board of Directors

SUPERVISES: Run Wild Missoula staff and volunteers

POSITION STATUS: Full-Time Exempt

SCHEDULE: Flexible schedule or as business needs warrant. Weekend, evening and early morning commitments are frequent. Occasional local, statewide and national travel as appropriate and deemed necessary.

POSITION EXPECTATIONS:

  • Community and Public Relations/Outreach:

    • Act as an ambassador and leader for Run Wild Missoula within the physical community, and online community (website, social networking, blog, newsletters, etc.)

    • Publicize and represent the organization’s mission, programs, and goals with various stakeholders throughout the community.

    • Build relationships and collaborations with other similar community organizations, government organizations, and business sectors.

    • Build relationships with local and statewide media as well as pertinent running-related national organizations

    • Ensure organizational presence at all Run Wild Missoula races, training runs, seminars and other special events.

  • Communications:

    • Ensure effective communication to/for/between Board of Directors, staff and volunteers.

    • Ensure regular and open communication with members to ensure they are aware of the organization’s policies and procedures and are in support of the organization’s mission.

    • Seek opportunities to communicate the mission of Run Wild Missoula to the public while actively recruiting new members and growing participation in Run Wild Missoula events.

    • Coordinate and refine all components of organizational communications, ranging from social media presence to external/community relations, with the goal of creating a stronger brand.

  • Fundraising:

    • Oversee fundraising efforts including sponsorship, donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, grants and special events, etc.

    • Develop and seek out fundraising streams and long term plans to best support the mission and goals of Run Wild Missoula .

    • Work with Run Wild Missoula staff members, volunteers and race directors to develop and carry out sponsorship plans for Run Wild Missoula events and activities that achieve goals of the organization as a whole as well as goals of the individual events and activities.

    • Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support and grow existing program operations.

    • Use external presence and relationships to garner new fundraising opportunities.

  • Board of Directors:

    • Provide information, and make recommendations to the Board of Directors in the creation of policies, programs, and the strategic direction of Run Wild Missoula.

    • Attend Board meetings, Finance Committee meetings and other meetings as needed to facilitate regular and on-going communication for/with the Board of Directors regarding event operations, goals, objectives, etc.

    • Support all Board of Directors activities, including but not limited to, new member recruitment and meeting development (schedules, location, agenda, materials, etc.).

    • Utilize the skillset of the Board of Directors, collectively and as individual members, where appropriate and as needed.

    • Inform Board of Directors regarding relevant activities and issues affecting the organization.

    • Assist in the creation of a strong board by recognizing skill sets in individuals within the community that could benefit the organization. Make recommendations to the board and recruit BODs as required.

  • Accounting and Finance:

    • Responsible for the financial management of Run Wild Missoula, including the development and implementation of the annual budget.

    • Oversee and manage the budget within Run Wild Missoula’s resources and in accordance with current State and Federal laws, regulations and policies established by the Board of Directors.

    • Develop and maintain sound financial practices to ensure the financial fitness of the organization.

    • Maintain all official records and documents to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

    • In conjunction with the Treasurer, ensure all accounting functions are carried out, including but not limited to receivables, payables, and tax and payroll filings.

    • Monitor and maintain federal tax-exempt status.

    • Work with Board Treasurer, Finance Committee and other resources where appropriate and as needed.

  • Human Resources and Organizational Administration:

    • Hire, in conjunction with the Board of Directors all Run Wild Missoula staff in accordance with hiring and employment policies.

    • Train, compensate, and evaluate all Run Wild Missoula staff in accordance with hiring and employment policies.

    • Supervise and provide direction to all Run Wild Missoula staff and volunteers, to ensure they act in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures and are in support of the organization’s mission.

    • Ensure regular and open communication by/between/amongst staff and volunteers.

    • Support and provide direction to all Run Wild Missoula volunteer race directors, encouraging event ownership while ensuring they act in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures and are in support of the organization’s mission.

  • Program Management:

    • Ensure programmatic excellence through regular and rigorous evaluation and consistent quality of finance, administration, fundraising, communications, and systems operations.

    • Develop and implement the annual work plan as approved by the Board of Directors.

    • Actively engage and energize Run Wild Missoula staff, volunteers, Board of Directors, members, work groups, partnering organizations and funders.

    • Lead, coach, develop, and retain Run Wild Missoula’s high-performance team of staff and volunteers.

    • Ensure the use of safe work practices in all aspects of the position to limit the possibility for injury to you, staff, volunteers, race participants, members and spectators as well as loss or damage to products and property.

  • Membership Management:

    • Recruit and retain club membership.

    • Develop and manage membership programs and benefits.

  • Missoula Marathon:

    • Oversee all Missoula Marathon activities and event components including but not limited to sponsorship, volunteer recruitment, registration, course management, volunteer coordination, vendor relations, merchandise, Missoula Marathon Expo and Festival, Kids Marathon, Missoula 5K, Friday Beer Run, Corporate Challenge, marathon equipment and Missoula Marathon seminars.

    • Responsible for the creation and implementation of the annual Missoula Marathon budget as approved by the Run Wild Missoula Board of Directors.

    • Ensure the Missoula Marathon is a viable and sustainable operation.

    • Provide leadership, direction, and support to the Missoula Marathon staff members and volunteers, to ensure all details of the race are successfully planned, organized, implemented, and evaluated.

    • Develop, implement and oversee the promotion and marketing (including website, social media and online communications) for all aspects of the event.

    • Provide regular and on-going feedback to the Board of Directors about Missoula Marathon operations to ensure that the event falls within the mission and overall strategic goals of Run Wild Missoula and is consistent with other Run Wild Missoula programs, policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience required. Advanced degree in related field is preferred. CPR certification is required. (Cost of certification provided by Run Wild Missoula if necessary.)

  • Experience: Must possess at least three years, or equivalent, of effectively managing and/or leading a for-profit or non-profit organization and staff; history of organizational experience, marketing and promotions, budget development and maintenance and fund-raising activities.

  • Specific Skills or Knowledge: Strong computer skills for word processing, producing e-newsletters, data processing and compiling budget information; excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach, manage and develop a high-performance team of staff and volunteers; prior experience working with a board of directors including the ability to cultivate productive Board member relationships.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to, handle, feel, frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

SALARY RANGE: $40,000-50,000 / year
