So this is perhaps a question for a coach or a very experienced runner. I used to be a more serious triathlete and back in 2007, I did a test that gave me accurate heart rate zones that I should train within. After several months, I was able to see improvement-I went faster and faster but kept my heart rate within a low range. I had a successful marathon in 2007 which I was hoping to replicate at the Missoula marathon. However, I have been training with a heart rate monitor and being diligent about staying within the range. Unfortunately, I have not seen any improvement with how fast I can go within that zone. I think I am at the same place I was when I started over 2 months ago. I looked at my notes from 2007 and I know that I definitely saw improvement this far into the training. Does anyone have ideas why this might happen? I thought maybe I was dehydrated but I haven't noticed a difference with increased liquid consumption. Any help would be very appreciated!

Hi. Hope you had a good marathon and got some kind of answer to your questions. I was wondering what test you did to get the most accurate heart rates. I don't think 220 minus my age is the right max heart rate for me.

Those numbers were waaay off for me too. I was about 10 beats lower than that formula gave me. I had the HR zones calculated with a coach. I did it on a bike where he upped the resistance incrementally and continuously asked me to judge my feeling of exertion on a scale of 1-10. I'm sure you could do it on a treadmill and do it by yourself (just google it) but I think it works better when you have someone else with you. I'm sure they could do it at Momentum if you asked although it will cost a bit. I hope that helps!

Great, thanks. I will search for more info on that.
Take care,
