I have never thought about doing "doubles" in order to log mileage. However, it seems to me it would change up the routine a bit and possibly be beneficial to overall running?? I hadn't thought about it at all until I read the article in the Newsletter by Tim on how he logged his miles. I'm wondering if breaking up long runs into two shorter ones (am and pm) is a good thing or if it really matters.
Is there a good rule as to how many workouts be broken into doubles without sacrificing overall training?

I agree, doubles are a great way to increase mileage. As with any aspect of running everything it is based on the individual with no set rules. I make a point of doubling around 60 MPW and beyond but they'd be beneficial at any mileage really. My doubling is typically a few days a week going on morning runs with my dog. When i'm getting more serious I'll do around 6 miles in AM with a regular workout in the PM several days a week.. The extra 18-20 MPW adds quite a bit to the overall mileage total. As far as the long run goes, you probably ought to leave that as it is. Assuming that you're training for longer distances, the long run is a quality workout that you shouldn't compromise.
