Member Spotlight: Greg Munro and Barbara Mitzkus-Munro

Meet RWM members Greg Munro (65) and Barb Mitzkus-Munro (59). Greg is a UofM Law professor who has been running since 1975, while Barbara a retired teacher has been running 5 years.

“We joined RWM when our niece joined our household and we were all doing more races.  We saved money on registrations and gear.  We gained easy access to healthy running information.”

How has the running group contributed to your success?  Saving $ is always a good thing, but this year Barb ran the Missoula ½ Marathon, her first!  The RWM training kept her motivated and running with other women & men let her know she could do it.  “There is no way I would have done the ½ without RWM group members!  Thank you.  You know who you are!”

Factors that motivate you to run?  G = Health, tension relief, true joy of running   B = Health, time with my husband and fun.

Who are your real life heroes?  G = Martin Luther King Jr. and Usain Bolt
B = Jeannette Rankin, my nieces and other women athletes in my life.

What sums you up as partners in running or racing?  We start together and always find each other at the other end.

”Running is only a part of our active lifestyle.  It is the basis of continual fitness.  In colder weather we work out together at the UM Fitness Center and ski whenever we can.  This summer was spent with Barb training for her first ½ Marathon and successfully completing it with thousands of other people.  Greg was her major supporter!  We camped, hiked and sailed in Glacier Park, rafted and fished the Missouri from the Canadian border to Polebridge, MT, backpacked the Beartooth Plateau, rode the Ovando Gran Fondo 55 mile mountain bike ride fundraiser for the Missoula Symphony and enjoyed the Hiawatha Trail with family.  We enjoy our life together.”
