Want to volunteer to be a lead on a trail session? Please email Run Wild Missoula.

Run Wild Missoula is choosing not to charge for trail sessions – in doing so, the hope is that participants will pass along what they consider the session to be worth in a donation to the Five Valleys Land Trust! The donation to FVLT will aid with the development of area trails and open spaces. Thanks for helping us give back to the open spaces we are so lucky to have in our backyards!

Donations can be made here.

LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS

Date:

September 14 - November 6, 2026

Start Time:

Varies

Start Location:

Varies

Choosing the Right Group

These are group trail runs, not races. The goal is to match runners with others of similar experience and ability. Trail running is very different from road running. Pace is only a general guideline and can vary greatly depending on elevation, terrain, and trail conditions. We encourage you to choose the group that best matches your trail experience, fitness, and comfort level—not just your average running pace.

Remember: Everyone hikes the steep hills—even the Mountain Goats! The goal is to enjoy the trails together, build confidence, and have fun.

MARMOT (Beginner)

For runners with some experience or a solid fitness base who are ready to spend more time running on trails.

The Marmot sessions introduce sustained effort on trails while building strength and stamina. Expect conversational-paced running on gentler sections, hiking steeper climbs, and learning to confidently navigate moderate trail terrain.

This group is a good fit if you:

  • Can comfortably run 3–5 miles
  • Have some road or trail running experience
  • Are comfortable hiking hills without frequent breaks
  • Want to improve your trail running skills and endurance

Typical road pace: 10:30–13:00 min/mile

TRAIL LASSIES! (50+ Women’s Group)

A supportive trail running group designed specifically for women ages 50 and older.

Whether you’re newer to trails or have some running experience, the Trail Lassies focus on building strength, confidence, and community while exploring Missoula’s beautiful trails. This group trots along at a comfortable, consistent pace—we’re certainly not speedsters anymore. Expect a conversational pace, hiking on steeper climbs, and lots of encouragement along the way. If you’re looking for a faster, more intense trail workout, one of our other groups may be a better fit.

This group is a good fit if you:

  • Are a woman age 50+
  • Can comfortably run 3–5 miles
  • Want a welcoming, social trail running community
  • Enjoy challenging yourself while having fun

MULE DEER (Intermediate)

For runners with solid trail experience who are ready for steeper climbs, longer distances, and more technical terrain.

The Mule Deer sessions emphasize consistent uphill effort, technical skill development, and pacing strategies for varied terrain. Expect longer routes, more elevation gain, and challenging trails while still regrouping throughout each run.

This group is a good fit if you:

  • Can comfortably run 5–8+ miles
  • Have previous trail running experience
  • Are comfortable on rocky, rooty, and uneven terrain
  • Enjoy longer climbs and technical descents

Typical road pace: 8:45–10:30 min/mile

MOUNTAIN GOATS (Advanced)

For experienced trail runners ready to tackle steep ascents, technical terrain, and challenging adventures.

The Mountain Goat sessions focus on advanced trail techniques, sustained uphill running, and preparing for races or big mountain objectives. Routes are often longer, steeper, and more technical than the other groups.

This group is a good fit if you:

  • Regularly run 8–15+ mile trail runs
  • Are comfortable with sustained climbing and technical descents
  • Have extensive trail running experience
  • Enjoy challenging terrain and pushing your limits

Please note: Mountain Goat sessions typically last about 90 minutes, slightly longer than our other Trail Sessions.

We’ll also cover the trail-running basics, including what gear you actually need, what to wear, and how to fuel for your adventures. And, most importantly, we’ll leave plenty of time for Q&A, so bring all those questions you’ve been wondering about. No trail-running question is too basic!

We’re teaming up with our friends at Runner’s Edge and gathering in their new community space. Their crew will share their expertise on trail gear and fueling, plus they’ll have samples and a few goodies to give away.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.DO I NEED TRAIL RUNNING EXPERIENCE TO PARTICIPATE?

Not at all! Our Trail Sessions welcome all experience levels, from those who are new to trails to seasoned runners. Whether you prefer hiking with light jogging or tackling technical climbs, there’s a group for you.

2. WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO A TRAIL SESSION?

Be prepared with sturdy trail running shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and water (a handheld bottle or hydration pack works well). Consider bringing snacks, a headlamp if it’s an evening or early morning session, and any personal items like sunscreen or bug spray.

While you don’t need any special gear to participate, a comfortable pair of running shoes and a water source are the essentials! If you’re participating in advanced sessions, gear like trekking poles or trail-specific accessories may be helpful, but they’re not required.

3. HOW LONG DO SESSIONS LAST?

Sessions typically last between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the group level and trail difficulty. Leaders will let you know the estimated duration before heading out.

4. WHAT TRAILS DO YOU USE FOR THE SESSIONS?

Our sessions explore a variety of Missoula’s beautiful trails. While the exact location varies, you’ll get to experience everything from beginner-friendly paths to challenging climbs. Details are shared before each session.

5. ARE DOGS ALLOWED?

For the safety and comfort of all participants, we ask that you leave your dogs at home during Trail Sessions, with the exception of ADA Service Animals, who must be kept on a 6ft non-retractable leash.

6. WHAT IF I CAN’T KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP?

No problem! Our volunteer leaders ensure that no one is left behind. In fact, all Run Wild Missoula programs follow a No-Drop Approach. If you’re unsure of your pace, we recommend starting with a lower level to build confidence and stamina.
