Run Wild Missoula is choosing not to charge for trail sessions – in doing so, the hope is that participants will pass along what they consider the session to be worth in a donation to the Five Valleys Land Trust! The donation to FVLT will aid with the development of area trails and open spaces. Thanks for helping us give back to the open spaces we are so lucky to have in our backyards!

Choosing the Right Group

These are group trail runs, not races. The goal is to match runners with others of similar experience and ability. Trail running is very different from road running. Pace is only a general guideline and can vary greatly depending on elevation, terrain, and trail conditions. We encourage you to choose the group that best matches your trail experience, fitness, and comfort level—not just your average running pace.

Remember: Everyone hikes the steep hills—even the Mountain Goats! The goal is to enjoy the trails together, build confidence, and have fun.

PIKA (Novice)

For those who are new to trail running or building their fitness for trails.

The Pika sessions focus on building endurance, becoming familiar with trail terrain, and enjoying the outdoors in a welcoming, no-pressure environment. Expect a mix of hiking and light jogging on easier sections, with plenty of breaks along the way.

This group is a good fit if you:

  • Are new to trail running or returning after a break
  • Are comfortable walking 2–4 miles
  • Enjoy a mix of hiking and easy jogging
  • Want to build confidence on uneven terrain and hills

Typical road pace: 13:00–16:00+ min/mile (or run/walk)

MARMOT (Beginner)

For runners with some experience or a solid fitness base who are ready to spend more time running on trails.

The Marmot sessions introduce sustained effort on trails while building strength and stamina. Expect conversational-paced running on gentler sections, hiking steeper climbs, and learning to confidently navigate moderate trail terrain.

This group is a good fit if you:

  • Can comfortably run 3–5 miles
  • Have some road or trail running experience
  • Are comfortable hiking hills without frequent breaks
  • Want to improve your trail running skills and endurance

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.DO I NEED TRAIL RUNNING EXPERIENCE TO PARTICIPATE?

Not at all! Our Trail Sessions welcome all experience levels, from those who are new to trails to seasoned runners. Whether you prefer hiking with light jogging or tackling technical climbs, there’s a group for you.

2. HOW DO I DETERMINE WHICH SESSION LEVEL IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Choosing the right session level is all about matching your current fitness and trail-running experience with the group’s pace and focus. Here’s a guide using The M Trail as a reference:

  • Novice: Perfect if you’re new to trails or building endurance. If you can hike The M Trail’s switchbacks with breaks, this is a great starting point.
  • Beginner: Ideal if you can hike The M Trail without frequent stops and feel comfortable jogging gentler sections of trail.
  • Intermediate: Designed for runners who can run portions of The M Trail while hiking steeper sections with minimal breaks. This level is for those ready to take on moderate trail challenges.
  • Advanced: Best for seasoned trail runners who can run all the switchbacks on The M Trail without stopping. If you’re ready for steep climbs and technical terrain, this level is for you.

3. WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO A TRAIL SESSION?

Be prepared with sturdy trail running shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and water (a handheld bottle or hydration pack works well). Consider bringing snacks, a headlamp if it’s an evening or early morning session, and any personal items like sunscreen or bug spray.

While you don’t need any special gear to participate, a comfortable pair of running shoes and a water source are the essentials! If you’re participating in advanced sessions, gear like trekking poles or trail-specific accessories may be helpful, but they’re not required.

4. HOW LONG DO SESSIONS LAST?

Sessions typically last between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the group level and trail difficulty. Leaders will let you know the estimated duration before heading out.

5. WHAT TRAILS DO YOU USE FOR THE SESSIONS?

Our sessions explore a variety of Missoula’s beautiful trails. While the exact location varies, you’ll get to experience everything from beginner-friendly paths to challenging climbs. Details are shared before each session.

6. ARE DOGS ALLOWED?

For the safety and comfort of all participants, we ask that you leave your dogs at home during Trail Sessions, with the exception of ADA Service Animals, who must be kept on a 6ft non-retractable leash.

7. WHAT IF I CAN’T KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP?

No problem! Our volunteer leaders ensure that no one is left behind. In fact, all Run Wild Missoula programs follow a No-Drop Approach. If you’re unsure of your pace, we recommend starting with a lower level to build confidence and stamina.
